When Can One Eat After a Root Canal?

Posted on 7/24/2023 by Lanier Valley Dentistry
When Can One Eat After a Root Canal?A root canal is a dental procedure that is used to treat a damaged tooth. The procedure involves removing the infected or damaged part of the tooth, followed by sealing the pathway of the tooth. Dentists usually fit a crown at the top to ensure regular use and stability.

Even though root canals have become a common procedure, you may not be sure about the aftercare. Therefore, you may be unsure about what to eat and even when to eat. Below is a comprehensive guide on when to eat and what to eat after a root canal;

When To Eat After a Root Canal Procedure

The dentist will use local anesthesia to stop you from experiencing any pain during the root canal. Dentists usually recommend that you eat once the numbness ends. This is because, if you eat while still numb, you are likely to bite your cheeks or tongue and burn yourself with hot foods or liquid. Ideally, the numbness usually last about an hour.

Foods To Eat After a Root Canal

Once the anesthesia wears off, then the numbness will stop. You may feel discomfort and tenderness. Therefore, you will want to stick to soft foods. These include; yogurt, eggs, rice, pasta, mashed potatoes, and even soft bread.

Foods To Avoid After a Root Canal

When your root canal is done, your dentist will place a temporary crown. To avoid damaging this crown and to stop any further damage to the tooth, the dentist will recommend staying away from foods that are hard to chew. These include nuts, ice, and even raw vegetables such as carrots. Try to avoid chewy foods such as meat and candies, as these could only lead to further damage.

Your teeth become more sensitive after surgery. Therefore, try to avoid any hot and extremely cold foods and drinks. This is to avoid irritating your teeth.

It is best to follow your dentist's guidelines regarding the best aftercare procedures. If you experience any kind of complication, make sure that you consult with your dentist.
