What is Mandibular Advancement Surgery?

Posted on 4/24/2023 by Lanier Valley Dentistry
What is Mandibular Advancement Surgery?Mandibular advancement surgery is an orthognathic surgery that focuses on positioning the lower jaw of the mouth in a forward position to deal with any mandibular abnormality hence improving breathing while sleeping. A maxillofacial or a craniofacial surgeon performs the surgery.

Maxillofacial surgeons may also perform the surgery to correct other conditions affecting the jaws and the airways that lead to sleep apnea and other facial problems. The surgery involves the surgeon making cuts within the mouth to reach the jaw bone on the lower side of the mouth.

The surgeon then repositions the jaw in a forward direction leading to expansion of the airways, contributing to better breathing while or when not asleep. The surgeon stabilizes the jawbone within the new position by attaching and fitting plates and screws and closing the incision with sutures.

Maxillofacial surgeons recommend mandibular advancement surgery to patients with long-term sleep apnea conditions and other mandibular abnormalities that cause breathing problems. However, surgeons opt for this surgery after trying other treatment options, such as using air pressure machines or applying oral appliances.

The surgeons recommend mandibular advancement surgery when these treatment options fail to offer the long-term solutions needed or lead to other breathing patterns problems. Also, people with mild and severe facial deformities which have affected the functionality of the jaw and the bite are fit to choose this surgery to correct the problems.

However, it is good to note that dental surgery comes with risks and complications; therefore, a patient must consult a maxillofacial surgeon for the possible dangers that may appear during the surgery and get more detail on other possible treatments before finalizing the surgery.
