Dentures - Complete, Partial, & Custom

Our team at Lanier Valley Dentistry are happy to fix comfortable and durable dentures for you at any time. Dentures are replacements for natural teeth. They are usually removable and can either be complete or partial. Complete dentures are total replacements for all of the teeth. They are used in situations where the individual does not have any natural teeth left. Partial dentures are used when there are some natural teeth remaining. Dentures can improve your smile and enhance your general facial appearance.

Complete dentures are either ‘immediate' or ‘conventional.' Immediate dentures are constructed in advance and are installed immediately when the teeth are removed. Conventional dentures are usually made after teeth removal, and the gums have begun to heal. The dentures are installed about 8 to 12 weeks after teeth removal. Conventional dentures are preferred to the immediate ones because, during the healing process, the gum tends to shrink, making the immediate dentures fit less properly.

For this reason, some dentists use the immediate dentures temporarily until the conventional ones are ready and placed.

How Dentures Are Made

Making dentures requires several visits to our clinic that span a few weeks. First, our dentist and prosthodontist will examine your teeth and determine the type of denture that is best for you. After this, they will make several impressions of your jaw and note how your jaws interrelate and the amount of space between them. Our dentist will make models, wax form and, if need be, plastic patterns following the impressions. These models are placed and examined if they fit well, and if the shape and color are okay before the final denture is constructed. When the dentures are ready, they are placed and adjusted.

Adjusting to the Dentures

After making new dentures, you will have to adjust to them accordingly. It may take time for you to get comfortable with removing and replacing them, talking, eating with them, and other activities. It may take up to a few weeks for your tongue and cheek muscles to get used to them. Minor irritation and soreness may occur at the initial stage. You may experience an increase in your salivation when you start using your new dentures. All these are normal and should be expected. However, there should be a relief after a few weeks when your mouth has adjusted to the dentures. The noticeable change in your appearance will be very little because dentures are made to look like your natural teeth. A regular visit to our clinic is required for professional guidance and monitoring.

Dentures are either complete or partial depending on whether all the teeth are missing or just some of them. The procedure for getting dentures is not so strenuous. Professional dentists or prosthodontists are supposed to be the ones to make dentures for you. Our team is ever ready to guide you on how to go about getting your dentures and how to use them and how long to wear and remove them.
