Dental Implant Restoration in Dacula, GA

At Lanier Valley Dentistry our mission is to help you maintain a healthy, beautiful, and functional smile. For some, this may mean restorative treatment. We offer implant restorations for patients that have lost one or more teeth. Dental implants have revolutionized the way we treat tooth loss!

Dental Implant Procedure

A dental implant is a tiny titanium screw that mimics the root component of a prosthetic tooth and provides a permanent solution. The procedure is usually broken into three stages: placement of the implant, placement of the abutment, and placement of the restoration.

During the first stage, Colin Lentz, DDS will perform minor surgery to place the implant screw below the gum and into the jawbone. We will have to drill a small hole in the bone so that the implant can be deeply embedded in the jaw. Once the implant is in place, the incision is sutured, and the surgery is complete. The length of surgery depends on the number of implants you receive and the type of restoration.

For the next several months, your bone and the implant will fuse together. This process is known as osseointegration. Osseointegration is largely responsible for the strength, durability, and longevity of implant-supported restoration. For osseointegration to be successful, there must be an adequate amount of bone in the jaw. In some cases, a patient may need to receive a bone graft before implantation is possible.

Once you are fully healed, and osseointegration is complete, we can proceed to the second stage of the procedure. During a second minor surgery, the implant is exposed so we can attach an abutment. An abutment is a support structure that links the screw to the restoration. Once the gum tissue has properly healed around the abutment, we can place your final restoration.

In many instances, we will fabricate a temporary restoration for you to use while you heal. The temporary restoration will protect the implant and abutment from the forces of your bite.

Types of Implant Restorations

There are now a wide variety of dental implant procedures that vary in duration and materials. Implants can be used to support some restorations, including:

•  A single dental crown - When a single tooth is missing, we use one implant to support a dental crown. Single crown implants are an excellent alternative to traditional dental bridges. Unlike traditional bridges, an implant-supported crown will not have negative consequences for your surrounding teeth.

•  Fixed bridges - When one or more adjacent teeth are missing, we can use a series of dental implants to support a fixed bridge. In many cases, an implant is placed for each missing tooth. When this is not possible, we can suspend a pontic between two implant-supported crowns. Fixed dental bridges are an excellent alternative to traditional bridges and partial dentures.

•  Full-mouth restorations - When a patient is missing many or all of their teeth, a series of implants can be used to support a full mouth restoration. Most implant-supported overdentures require six to eight dental implants per arch. An implant-supported denture, while still removable, can be strengthened with the support of two to four dental implants. If you are in need of a full-mouth restoration, dental implants are the ideal solution.
