Signs your Toothache May Be From an Infected Tooth

Posted on 11/9/2020 by Lanier Valley Dentistry
Signs your Toothache May Be From an Infected ToothAn infected tooth is also known as a Tooth or Dental Abscess. This is a pocket of pus in different areas of your tooth caused by a bacterial infection. There are two types of tooth abscesses. A periapical abscess occurs at the tip of the root and a periodontal abscess occurs in the gums at the side of the tooth root. These could both be due to untreated dental cavities, or similar issues.

When the Pain Doesn't Stop

A common and short-lived toothache is not usually cause for concern of infection. While you should still discuss toothaches with our staff, it may not be a sign of a larger issue. You should contact your doctor if the pain persists and even throbs. If the pain does not go away and begins to spread to your jawbone or neck, this could be a sign that the toothache is caused by an infected tooth or a dental abscess. The spreading of pain could also lead to swelling of your face and cheeks.

When the Toothache appears with Other Symptoms

Another symptom your toothache may be indicative of a larger problem is when the toothache is paired with other symptoms and issues. If your teeth begin to be more sensitive to the temperature of your food or from the pressure on your tooth from eating, it could be a sign of infection. In addition to the sensitivity and difficulty in eating, difficulty in breathing or swallowing could also be a sign that you need to contact us to investigate your toothache further.

Some of these symptoms alone may not be a sign of a tooth abscess, but you should discuss these issues with our professionals. If you have a toothache, call our office today. Our experts want to help ensure that you are not suffering from an infection or other issues that could hamper your oral health.
