How Long is the Right Length of Time to Brush?

Posted on 10/5/2020 by Lanier Valley Dentistry
How Long is the Right Length of Time to Brush? Our professionals urge our patients to brush their teeth at least twice a day. However, there are incorrect ways to brush teeth. Brushing too hard or brushing with an overused brush are two common examples. An even bigger mistake is not brushing for a long enough period of time. Just running the toothbrush over the teeth for a few seconds will not ensure the removal of harmful bacteria and food particles. That is why our professionals urge our patients to brush their teeth for at least two minutes.

Two Minutes for Terrific Teeth

The ADA recommends that patients brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes. To measure the time, the patient can use a smart device such as a cell phone. For patients at home, an egg-timer works as well. Some patients can listen to one of their favorite songs and continue to brush their teeth until the song ends. When it comes to brushing teeth, brushing for too much time is preferable to brushing for not long enough.

Additional Steps for a Healthy Mouth

When brushing, patients are urged to use a fluoridated toothpaste. Patients are urged to use electric toothbrushes when possible, as electric toothbrushes are more effective at removing plaque than standard toothbrushes. Patients should floss once a day to remove particles that toothbrushes will miss. Swishing with a fluoridated mouthwash or medicated oral rinse after flossing will remove additional particles and promote healthy teeth and gums. Drinking water regularly will prevent dry mouth and the accumulation of harmful bacteria. Dietary choices are a vital component of oral health, so patients are advised to eat healthy foods and avoid sugary snacks and acidic drinks. Patients should replace their toothbrushes every three to four months. And patients should schedule at least biannual cleanings and exams with our team.
