Straws Could Ease Your Tooth Sensitivity

Posted on 12/21/2020 by Lanier Valley Dentistry
Straws Could Ease Your Tooth SensitivityDoes it hurt when you eat or drink something hot or cold? Does the cold air make your mouth hurt? If you experience any sensitivity to temperature, you're likely dealing with a major cavity or a broken tooth. You need to certainly make an appointment right away so we can look at what's going on. In the meantime, you want to do whatever you can to reduce the amount of pain you're in. One thing that can help is drinking through a straw.

How Straws Help

Straws can help you avoid pain by letting you direct where the liquid is going. You can place the straw on the other side of your mouth so the hot or cold drink avoids the sensitive tooth. While this can be somewhat difficult to use while drinking something like hot coffee, it can certainly help with most other drinks. Using a straw also helps keep liquids out of any cracks or cavities you have. This can help avoid pain, but it also helps avoid putting anything on those areas that could promote bacteria growth or cause further damage.

Using a Straw All the Time Is Also Helpful

In addition to using a straw when you feel pain from heat and cold, you can use a straw all the time to help improve your oral health. By using a straw, you can prevent a good amount of your drink from getting on your teeth. This helps reduce the stains on those teeth as well as prevents the acids and sugars in beverages from sticking to them. While you still should avoid drinking soda, coffee, and other drinks that could damage your teeth, using a straw can at least help minimize the damage. Another way of reducing the damage done to your teeth is to come in every six months for a checkup. If you don't have your next checkup scheduled, call today to make an appointment.
