Dental Bonding

Here at Lanier Valley Dentistry we conduct bonding procedures to repair teeth. Bonding involves the application of composite resin with a similar color to that of your teeth. Bonding is a restorative and cosmetic procedure. You can opt for bonding instead of amalgam fillings.

One of the most impressive aspects of bonding is that it can be completed in a single visit to our dentist’s office. Unlike veneers and crowns that need customized molding and a couple of days to manufacture, the composite resin is applied to the teeth and it bonds within minutes.

Why Would You Require Bonding?

Bonding is an inexpensive and simple cosmetic dental procedure. It is quite effective, however. As mentioned above, it is used to restore the shape and color of damaged teeth. The composite resin used is quite flexible before it hardens. It can easily be shaped into a perfect tooth, that matches the surrounding teeth. Bonding can also be applied to fill gaps between teeth or make your teeth appear longer.

Bonding can be used on patients with receding gums. At times, there isn’t enough gum tissue to cover the exposed tooth root. The composite resin can be used to cover the tooth root. In such instances, it will be shaped and colored to match the surrounding gum.

The Procedure

Our dentists have a shade guide that they used to select the color that best matches your teeth. They’ll discuss and show you the color so that you agree. Once you’ve both chosen the color, our dentists will etch the surface of the damaged tooth/teeth to make it a bit rough. The rough surface ensures composite resin strongly bonds on it.

The etched surface will then be lightly coated with a conditioning liquid that also prepares it for bonding. The composite resin is putty-like and easy to mold and smoothen until it attains a perfect tooth-shape. Ultraviolet or Laser radiation is then shone onto the resin to harden it.

After the composite resin has hardened, our dentist will trim it and polish it further to give it a perfect shape and an even finish. He or she has to polish the tooth and until the resin’s sheen is not differentiable from the rest of the teeth.

The bonding procedure usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes to complete. If you have more than one damaged tooth, you may require several appointments to have all them repaired. The procedure does not cause any kind of discomfort, and anesthesia is not necessary unless the tooth being worked on is decayed.

The composite resin can still get damaged or stained. You need to take good care of your teeth to ensure the repaired teeth do not get stained again. You should not drink tea or coffee and any other staining food within 48 hours after the procedure.
